She is the eldest, which often means that the person is more responsible than younger siblings. Her inborn temperament is probably also different from Marianne's and their mothers, who are more similar. Marianne could have been an easier child for Mrs Dashwood to understand and therefore more indulged. Elinor could also have been more of a daddy's girl after Marianne was born and Mrs Dashwood was more concentrated on the baby.
