Elinor is perhaps treating Marianne the way Elinor would want to be treated, if she were Marianne, if all were well. We know Elinor was quite embarrassed when it seemed she would be teased about a certain Mr. F, and she really values her privacy. She is wishing to treat Marianne the same, regardless of how Marianne might have disregarded her feelings when she asked Elinor(althought sweetly) about her and Edward. And I do tend to agree that there is a lack of self-confidence, perhaps mostly because of the circumstances in that, maybe Marianne was offended by her sentiments and that's why she hadn't yet chose to share her secret engagement with Elinor, if indeed there was one. Is a bit of a Catch-22. Upset Marianne by finding out she isn't engaged, or provoke Marianne because Elinor could doubt she IS engaged (the same indignation expressed by Mrs. Dashwood on Marianne's behalf.)
