in consequence of the missive, Reading Hamlet with Willoughby, penned by Barbara
You cannot call it love; for at your age
Or in modern English: "Eeeeuuuw! Mom, people your age are too old to like $ex!"
I always think of this when Marianne talks like no one over twenty could love or that Brandon practically has one foot in the grave. Speaking as one on the wrong side of five and forty whose "heyday in the blood" is not tame at all, I have to laugh at both Marianne and Hamlet for these sentiments. (In fact, Brandon's beginning to seem quite the young and dashing fellow to me. *g*)
But of course, I doubt Marianne and Willoughby got this far into the play, and what a shame, too. "Assume a virtue, if you have it not" might have done Willoughby some good.
