which makes me think that Sir John (at least) planned to rent it out.

Maybe Sir John had it built before he married, and then couldn't find tenants to suit his wife? She didn't seem to require prior approval of these cousins; at least, she didn't need to meet them to approve of them, if her approval were a pre-requisite.

I guess we can't know for sure, but it does make me wonder. :-)
