It's interesting how she assumes that Elinor and Edward are engaged on evidence that's much flimsier than her behaviour with Willoughby (first name terms, locks of hair, visiting Willoughby's relative's house, meaningful looks etc. etc.). And it certainly seems like Mrs Dashwood is hedging her bets a little!
