I agree with what you say. It seems Mrs. Dashwood resents Elinor for daring to say aloud that something was wrong with Willoughby's behavior. She may be emotional, but she's not dumb. Knowing Willoughby's openness, his behavior that last morning seems unaccountable. Poor Elinor taking the brunt of the heat that should have been placed on Willoughby.

It really makes me wish that we could have heard the conversation between Marianne and Willoughby. For though Marianne thought they were going to married, as Barbara's post below shows, you would think Marianne would have some nagging doubts if he said anything to her in the same way he did with Elinor and Mrs. Dashwood that morning.
