Living Up to Her Words   Written by Robbin (9/14/2009 8:53 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Potent sensibility!, penned by Barbara
Are you new?

Potent indeed Barbara! (:D) I agree Marianne feeds and encourages her grief just as she and her mother did after the death of Henry Dashwood. Although her grief is from a different source the excess sensibilities is nearly an instant replay of the past. It is strange the expression of such strong feelings is actually so lacking in spontaneity. I have to wonder how much Marianne and Mrs. Dashwood have trained themselves to respond to grief in this manner. Did they grieve great-uncle Dashwood in a like manner? Further, in Ch. 8 Marianne found Elinor and Edward’s behavior towards each other at Norland incomprehensible, especially their farewell:

"And Elinor, in quitting Norland and Edward, cried not as I did. Even now her self-command is invariable. When is she dejected or melancholy? When does she try to avoid society, or appear restless and dissatisfied in it?" (Ch. 8)

After Willoughby leaves Barton in Ch. 15 Elinor thinks of that violent sorrow which Marianne was in all probability not merely giving way to as a relief, but feeding and encouraging as a duty. Although I agree that Marianne feels deeply she plays out her grief at Willoughby’s departure in chapters 15 and 16 just as she had supposed Elinor should have when she parted from Edward. Marianne lives up to her words. She has no self-command and no desire for it; she is dejected and melancholy and she avoids society and is restless and dissatisfied with it. Her prescience is another example that Marianne follows an internal scripted behavior that she has learned from stories, poems and her mother. (:D)
