Probably the late owner of Norland   Written by Barbara (9/13/2009 1:22 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, The great uncle´s miniature..., penned by MarianneR
Are you new?

Sir John is their mother's cousin, so they would not call him great-uncle. To me, it makes sense that this would be the great uncle who has already been in the story--their father's uncle with whom they lived at Norland. Early on we were told that there was affection between him and the girls. I wonder if they looked upon him almost as a grandfather (and he would have been their grandfather's brother).

I found that surprising for two reasons. If he meant enough to Marianne (and her sisters) that she had a miniature of him she would wear around, even a year and a half after he died, perhaps there was a much closer family connection there? And, if so, that makes it all the more surprising that he left them so little in his will.
