Edward Ferrars mystery...   Written by Moni (9/13/2009 7:28 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, S&S as work of a young novelist, penned by Heather Leigh
Are you new?

Loved reading these posts, as Edward is my GR focus. He is elusive, and in constrast to the others, he seems very vague and not really exciting at all.

Yet there are some things that are of interest in Chapter 3 where he is described as not being much for public display in any way, and is more a private man. He has no ambition, but for the "private life" and "domestic comfort".

He seems to be elusive, or elude any kind of strong structure as a person, due to, IMHO, JA's reference to him being "too diffident to do justice to himself". She says he has a natural shyness, which only intimacy overcomes, so it's really no wonder we don't get to see a great deal. This is Edward, only open to Elinor at this stage, for reasons we know not.

JA seems to give us only what the character will allow others within the story, and it seems this is some kind of clever device of hers. She gives him a kind of mystery that is outside the usual hero type of character, IMHO.
