Johnson's dictionary I discovered that the 2 examples of the use of the word 'elegant' are by Pope.


Trifles themselves are elegant in him.

There mayst thou find some elegant retreat.

Did Pope use this word a lot? It's meaning then as now;
Pleasing with minuter beauties
Nice, not coarse; not gross

Perhaps Margaret has a poetic turn herself (caught on from Marianne) and uses this word which sounds infinitely better than *rescuer*
