Yes, Elinor...   Written by Reeba (9/12/2009 12:10 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Exertion, penned by Barb JA
Are you new?

*teases* Marainne which is very different from making fun or sly insinuation, and teasing is what I sense in the earlier case.

The twinkle in her eye which some of us see is also about Elinor's several occasions that she gets to be with Edward which went unnoticed by her romantic sister.

This present situation is very very different from the first.
The first one effects Elinor too. One has to work towards acceptance of death since it is so final and irreverible.

This case is not a general case effecting the family as a whole. Here a live man is acting dead and even Elinor is anxious about the situation.
This situation does not invite *teasing*.

Anyway. This feeling of there being an angle of 'humour' in Elinor's remark is what some sense.
There are those who don't.
Either way is possible, since it is the written word rather than spoken when it would have been easier to judge the tone. :-)
