even to say that she and Edward "have been at times thrown a good deal together" suggests (to me) that Marianne and her mother have been negligent in leaving Elinor and Edward with no one to talk to but each other. Not being hospitable to Edward, and not sharing with Elinor the duties of playing hostess.

Not that Elinor is mad at her mother and sister, but she can't resist pointing this out in the gentlest, most indulgent way.... so gently that Marianne misses it completely ;-)
