As the French would have it   Written by Barbara (9/10/2009 1:51 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, My mother, my aunt, etc., penned by kathleen (elder)
Are you new?

I find that a lot of the archaic ways of referring to someone are often the way it is still said in French. In French, you would still say 'my mother' or 'my aunt' etc. even when addressing one of your own siblings. The French also use the same expression for mother-in-law (belle mere) interchangeably with what they call a step mother, as they do in this novel.
