Perhaps "respectability" here is a matter of public perception rather than a moral judgement on a person's private behaviour.

He looks like a gentleman, walks like a gentleman and talks like a gentleman, and above all he is rich! So as long as his moral failings and vices are not too blatantly obvious (?such as dressing in rags and flaunting his harem of rowdy mistresses around a quiet country village?) then public opinion will deem him "respectable".

Or perhaps I am being overly cynical.
