I wonder if this is a clue?   Written by Barbara (9/10/2009 10:25 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Perhaps it was..., penned by Reeba
Are you new?

We really can't prove how Sir John learned about this, but I was struck by this line from the start of Ch. 3

"... she was impatient to be gone, and indefatigable in her inquiries for a suitable dwelling in the neighbourhood of Norland;"

It sounds like Mrs. Dashwood was asking anyone and everyone she knew if they knew of anywhere around Norland. We know that Sir John had visited the family at Stanhill. Perhaps he knew people who knew the Dashwoods? Or, perhaps, since he is Mrs. Dashwood's cousin, there were other mutual cousins or relatives or connections of theirs who were among those to whom Mrs. Dashwood had made her inquiries?

It's a possibility, at least. I don't that the obituary or death notice that may have been in a newspaper would have indicated that Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters were anxious to move, and that that idea had to have come from some other source.
