I don't think guests were particularly divided in to age groups as such when the gathering was small.

And while playing everyone sat around to listen. He wouldn't get up and go because that would be rude. Even talking during the playing was considered bad mannered.

I would say that the colonel would react exactly as he did because that is his way. :-)
