I had assumed that when Lady Middleton requested that Marianne sing the song she had just finished, it was because she had not been able to hear for Sir John's talking over the music. She wanted Marianne to repeat it.

But your explanation is probably the correct one.

They were really a rowdy bunch, weren't they? Yet, they probably considered themselves to be the epitome of good taste. :)
