I've never stopped to consider how Sir John would have heard about their needing a place to stay before! They don't seem to have a lot of other relatives - after all, no one but John Dashwood is asking them to stay. Perhaps the other relatives are too poor to make any offers? They seem completely alone except for the competing John's.
