in consequence of the missive, She's sixteen right here and it shows, penned by Angela C
Judging from novels, a sixteen year-old girl was an adult in Austen's time, at least in the important sense of being marriageable. Emotionally she may have been immature, but regarded as old enough to be a wife (and manager of a household, if her husband had one).
