Chawton cottage.   Written by Reeba (9/9/2009 2:57 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Explanation from Norton Critical Edition, penned by BarbaraB
Are you new?

It reminds me of Chawton cottage (where JA went to live) of Chawton House belonging to her rich brother.

Barton cottage must look like it as belonging to another big house.
It would seem all these big houses had such a cottage on their land, which would neither be rustic and simple nor the modern fashionable variety.

In those times I suppose small gardens, some rooms on the first floor, and a livable attic was minimum in a cottage belonging to the 'big' house.
