What is a "cottage" anyway?   Written by Louise H (9/8/2009 9:32 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Questions about the cottage, penned by Gina Marie
Are you new?

I'm wondering what the term "cottage" would have conveyed to people in this time, to distinguish this house from others. Any ideas? What makes a cottage different from a house -- if not green-painted shutters and honeysuckle? I think a cottage can never be big, but this one -- as others say -- seems plenty spacious for a small family. And perhaps a cottage can't be attached to a farm?

Maybe a cottage would be understood to be a genteel house that has adequate living accommodation for no more than 3 or 4 servants?
