in consequence of the missive, The expectations of society, penned by Elizabeth K
I realize that I have been misreading this passage. I had been thinking that it was Mrs. Ferrars who would settle to see Edward in a barouche until he could achieve the position in life she really aspired for him. But I see now that it was Mrs. Dashwood who wished the barouche for him.
Mrs. Dashwood wanted her daughters to marry for love, but apparently the trappings of a certain socio-economic status were still very important to her.
