To me, it's like if a BF meets the GF's parents, it doesn't mean an engagement is at hand. Wasn't it presumptuous of Mrs Dashwood to declare an immediate motherly affection for Edward? Who knows what skeletons were in his closet :-)

Marianne, I can understand. She can be a bit irrational, but Mrs Dashwood...
