and that is why I believe that the conversation in Ch. 2 only lasted a couple of hours, max., although I can find no proof of it anywhere. John felt duty-bound for the sake of appearances, but in reality he much preferred keeping the money in his own pocket, so it would not take a lot of time for Fanny to persuade him.

I like to think the best of people too. But Fanny is my exception...
