Perhaps JA didn't place sense at the apex of behaviour   Written by Tom P2 (9/7/2009 5:28 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Marriane's sense, penned by Elbč
Are you new?

If JA regarded sense the same way when she wrote S+S, as when she had Mr Knightley say "Better be without sense, than misapply it as you do" (Emma ch8), then perhaps it's sometimes just a tool, subordinate to other qualities of mind. This would support the idea that Marianne has sense but sometimes suppresses it.
