Even though the amount of money seems like it would be feasible (if not easy) to make the jump down, there are things that we don't have to consider nowadays (at least most people do not offer a dowery any more to marry their daughters). Not to mention, as Barbara stated above, the extra expense of 3 servants. Where they live is going to be curtailed to what they can afford and they still need to keep some money by for the 2 daughters that are of marriagable age.
