|The servants are an interesting factor

I'm not sure that 30,000 pounds a year is the right comparison to this money. But say for the sake of argument that it is. This would be about $49,000 a year U.S. ($53,000 Canadian) This is not poverty, to be sure, but I also know that it would be very, very difficult for a family to make ends meet on that in the city where I live, to say nothing of trying to keep three servants! With even double that yearly income, it would be hard to even afford a cleaning lady for a family with 3 or more children.
I think that the servants were expected as part of living in a genteel manner--no one would expect the Dashwood women to be out chopping their own firewood and doing a lot of those types of tasks.
