John's change of heart   Written by Carol J. (9/6/2009 4:54 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Is Ch.2 for real?, penned by Anselm
Are you new?

At the end of chapter 2, we read after the conversation(s) between John and Fanny,

"This argument was irresistible. It gave to his intentions whatever of decision was wanting before..."

I interpreted this to mean that the original sum of 3000 pounds was the result of John's feeling duty-bound for the sake of appearances, but that his selfish nature responded to the arguments Fanny came up with, and he glady seized upon them as justification for giving his sisters nothing--which had been his original intent if the truth were told.
