Are you new?

I once remarked that if I had to choose an Austen hero for a husband, I would choose Edward. "What? Not Mr. Darcy?" came the surprised reply!

Edward still appeals to me, his "quietness of manner", affectionate temper and warm heart sound quite lovely, IMO! ;-)
Edward feels deeply, like Elinor, but I have always got the impression that he is simply shy and occasionally self-conscious. I always think, "oh, poor Edward" when Marianne discusses his calm reading of Cowper:

"Oh mama! how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night! I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat. To hear those beautiful lines which have frequently almost driven me wild, pronounced with such impenetrable calmness, such dreadful indifference!" (Ch. 3).

How embarrassed Edward must have felt at Marianne's impatience at his manner of reading!
