...serves also as an introduction to the theme of the power of marriage. One partner can influence the other, for good or ill. The strength of Fanny's personality is such that she takes John over to "the dark side." Throughout the novel (and all the novels, actually), we will see different couples of similar or differing temperaments and observe how they influence one another for better or worse.
