Another underline - Sensible Marianne   Written by Barb JA (9/6/2009 12:09 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Chapter 1: The Dashwood Sisters, penned by kathleen (elder)
Are you new?

I think it's interesting that we are told Elinor has "strong feelings" and that Marianne is "sensible". Everything in the description of Elinor denotes her sense, and everything in Marianne's description shows her strong feelings.

I looked up "sensible" in the dictionary and it reads "adj having or showing wisdom or common sense". Synonyms are "reasonable, logical, rational, reasoned, prudent, judicious; well-thought-out."

We've already been told that Marianne is "everything but prudent". Elinor knows how to govern her feelings, but it is something one of her sisters had resolved never to be taught.

I think it's an interesting distinction. Marianne is not incapable of learning to govern her emotions. By her logic, she believes it is wrong.
