terminology around 1800 was looser than it is now. "Cousin" was used for "relative" and "mother" for "mother in law". In S&S, Mrs Dashwood, John's stepmother, is referred to in Ch.1 as his mother in law, and his stepsisters as his sisters. Given this, could it be possible that the word "children" in the quote above could be taken to include stepchildren?
