Are you new?

He had a life interest in half of his first wife's estate, and the narrator tells us that was large. I'm not quite sure why he didn't save at least some amounts from that -- unless that accounts for the 7000 pounds which he left he widow and daughters?

And I agree that old Mr Dashwood was trying to be kind to his great nieces by leaving them each 1000 pounds.
