Throughout his speech he insists, commands, speaks with vehemence, and mouths phrases as the example above and several more. I too don't understand how on earth he can charm anyone.

I agree with Tom that it was Elinor's state of relief over Marianne's recovery, and the aftermath of sleepless nights which make her vulnerable.
