Titanium backbone (good phrase, btw!) and sleep deprivation   Written by Tom P2 (10/23/2006 5:26 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Ah, you beat me to it!, penned by Heidi M.
Are you new?

Elinor didn't necessarily have all her wits about her at the time, what with all the recent fear for Marianne's life, and the sleep deprivation.

I tend to latch onto this bit from the start of chapter 45: his influence over her mind was heightened by circumstances which ought not in reason to have weight. It suggests that Elinor's well on the way to withdrawing the excessive sympathy she felt in the heat of the moment.

(OK, now I'm quite distracted thinking about the cold fury in Irene Richard's voice, and Peter Woodward prowling around the room and mouthing some of his words silently before getting them out, and the crackling fire in the background... great scene, great scene.)
