in consequence of the missive, Does 'exchange' necessarily mean 'sale'? nfm, penned by Tom P2
I was unable to find exchange in Dr Johnson, so checked the Oxford dictionary- 'exchange' is defined as to give something and receive something else in return. It could be fianacial.
Elinor could be negotiating a financial transaction in exchange for 'a few old-fashioned jewels'.
I'm unsure if 'exchanging' a few jewels will cover costs of time, labour and craftsmanship to re-set the jewels or fits in with Elinor's usually prudent habits.
My impression was the Dashwood ladies still had other jewellery suitable to wear.
