in consequence of the missive, I usually imagine, penned by Ann2
I have heard our principal refer to a couple of the younger male teachers on staff as 'puppys', and she did not intend it derogatorily. Her meaning was more that they are always bounding around, eager and full of energy, and sometimes you can get them to do things other people don't want to do ;-) So I associated the phrase with youth and maybe immaturity also, although I mean that as no slight on my junior colleagues!
Not to get into Austenuations territory either, but I always wondered just how negative JA meant it to be, if Mrs. Elton could be so vehement against them. Her censure may be praise!
