We don't know why Fanny needs a new one at this time, but does that not seem like the sort of thing you'd only need to buy once? I can't imagine it wearing out, even after years and years of use. For someone who is crying poverty during most of his speech, is this not exceedingly hypocritical when he's in a jewelry shop buying an item that they probably already have at home?
I read that he seals were one-of-a-kind and hand engraved. I imagine that they were some sort of a status symbol.
I wonder if there was some sort of custom among the wealthy to begin the season by getting a new seal every year, so that they could show it off? Or maybe it needed to somehow proclaim or indicate that they were now in possession of Norland?
