Not to stray too far into Austenuations territory, but the word appears at key moments in Emma, and we told, by Mrs Elton herself, that she had "a vast dislike to puppies -- quite a horror of them"; she also refers to a certain person as "an abominable puppy".

It was like calling someone a spoiled and frivolous young man in a not very nice way.
