Your Question   Written by James S. (10/17/2006 10:55 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Question, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

You see CB is not at all sure that Marianne will accept him. It seems unlikely, and as long as that is the case, CB loves her with devotion. To this point, Marianne does not even particularly like him.

My hunch, granted it is a hunch, is that he has relived the Eliza debacle in his mind. And, after all, Eliza came back to him. But incapacitated. It is interesting that CB did not find another woman after he lost Eliza. He is rather found of losing women. This is no slur on CB -- it would make him a fascinating psychiatric study. Many of us are attracted to what we cannot have. It brings CB closer to the human level.
