How do you know Brandon wants Marianne because she is not his? If he feels that way it is not ever mentioned in the text as the attractions of her character and likeness to Eliza is. It is also strange that Brandon still shows feelings for her now after Willoughby abandoned her—has she not lost the appeal of belonging to another? Brandon said he loved Eliza all his life and we do not know when his father decided to marry her to his eldest son to secure her fortune to his estate—there is a real and distinct possibility that Brandon loved Eliza before the estate became encumbered and a plan to secure Eliza’s fortune was made.
