... we get such a lovely glimpse into her big heart: "and I believe I could help them to a housemaid, for my Betty has a sister out of place, that would fit them exactly." (Remember, that in those days when unemployment benefits were nonexistent, being "out of place" could be a very serious matter.)

And then, of course, there's the wonderful giggleworthy line: "Here Mrs. Jennings ceased, and as Elinor had had time enough to collect her thoughts..." Oh, yes indeed; I BET she had PLENTY of time to collect her thoughts, while Mrs Jennings went on about everything from her daughter's lying-in to her daughter's baby to her daughter's doctor to the juicy gossip conveyed by the latter to the musings about placing worthy unemployed girls...
