That's the worst thing about him, really   Written by Mary Anne (10/17/2006 8:25 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Does John Dashwood even, penned by Rebecka
Are you new?

Fanny is odious for obvious reasons: she's a greedy, grasping harpy who deliberately manipulates her husband into breaking his promise and reducing his sisters to genteel poverty when he is capable of helping them with no loss to himself, his wife, or his child. But the "clueless" comment about John really struck me. Many people have said they long to slap Fanny, and I think if I could sit her down and vent about how I regard her behaviour, she would at least be aware of why I feel as I do. She might not change or even care, but I think she at least has some knowledge of her actions.

But I think that John would be totally bewildered. If I could sit him down and yell at him about his actions, I think his expression would be one of pained surprise. He really wouldn't see his actions for how wrong they are. A wicked person might or might not repent, but a clueless person doesn't even recognize what he's done. John never has more than the faintest glimmering that what he did was "badly done" and he probably thinks of himself as a decent sort of man. Scary.
