It's this: "she fancied them satirical; perhaps without exactly knowing what it was to be satirical". One can almost feel sorry for Lady M... and yes, I'm with Line that there must have been more than one not-so-bright woman of her acquaintance (without a very large vocabulary, either...) who feared her mordant wit.
