That duel was certainly about more than Eliza's honour, even if that was the professed reason the challenge was issued. It would be difficult indeed for Brandon to separate his feelings for his ward from his feelings for what happened to her mother at the hands of another unscrupulous, worthless, young spendthrift who was so much like Willoughby in all the bad ways.

And it would be difficult for him to forget, as he aimed at Willoughby with his duelling pistol, that this man was his rival in romance as well.
