And yet the army moved beyond that   Written by Tracy W (10/14/2006 4:35 a.m.) in consequence of the missive, Col. Brandon is an officer and a gentleman, penned by Janette K
Are you new?

And yet the army eventually moved beyond such silly "codes of honour". So obviously at least some men in the army were such gentlemen as to be able to improve their code of honour to something more useful.

The tradition of duelling I understand was also illegal.

So Colonel Brandon is not only engaging in a dangerous, pointless activity, but breaking the law to do so.

Failing to duel would also protect Eliza's privacy, while duelling risked it. If Willoughby or the Colonel had been injuried in the duel it would have been much more likely to be found out, and thus more likely to make Eliza the topic of gossip.
