that there had been a duel. I would think it would be hard to keep that kind of thing a secreat after the fact. It could have been Colonel Brandon's only point in fighting the duel - meet Willoughby, and then let things slip later on that he is not quite so much the gentleman that everyone things he is, that he had trifled a gently-bred young woman (though that woman was illegitimate).

I speak from speculation only really, as to Brandon's motives. But i do think it would be hard to keep a meeting a secret after it was over.
