Colonel Brandon has indeed tried to step in and help salvage the feelings of Marianne.

He seems to have succeeded to some extent in at least gaining some good opinion for himself.

Of course Marianne has yet to see him as the romantic hero. Maybe she will, but maybe she will realise he is even better than that :)
