pistols vs rifles   Written by teri-mc (10/12/2006 3:04 p.m.) in consequence of the missive, Thoughts on the duel…, penned by Robbin
Are you new?

Shooting for sport was done with rifles. Duels were usually done with pistols. From my personal experience with modern guns, it is a lot easier to aim a rifle than a pistol. I would think this would be even more difficult with the heavier weapons used in the 1800s.

There is also the fact that these weapons were not as accurate unless in short quarters. They also produced a lot of smoke, so if Willoughby fired first, Brandon could have had a harder time seeing Willoughby when he pulled the trigger. I do think it is possible for both men to miss for a variety of reasons.

During the Pennusular War, Baker Rifles were important because of their increased accuracy, but they took longer to load.

Below is a link to a place that makes replicas to get an idea of what sort of pistols they might have used.
