Spoiled brats and Elinor

in consequence of the missive, Anne, and Lucy and Vengeful Children—oh my! LOL :D, penned by Robbin
Now, I'll take into account the fact that Annamaria is only 3, and that makes her a little more bratty than the average bear. However, with the other children making a mess, she just seems like the icing on the cake. Plus, you'd think that Lucy and Anne would leave a crying child to the mother (or father, in the case of my own, er, precious niece) as common sense would dictate. As Robbin points out, though, the Steeles are ingratiating themselves. Who knows how deep their feelings run? As to Elinor being two-dimensional: I'll admit that I would like to see her express herself more, rather than waiting for the narrator to share her feelings with me. There are a lot of clues to Elinor's character, though. She is obviously the eldest, and cleans up the messes that everyone else leaves behind. In a way, I feel that she has sort of taken on the "father" role of the family now that he is dead, and is the voice of reason. If she didn't always have to look out for everyone, if Marianne would exert herself a little more, and if her mother could, through her current grief (a few months is not really enough to get over the loss of a husband, IMO) and really direct Marianne, then I think we would see a different side to Elinor. |
